Program Goals

The Skills for Life program focuses on five key developmental areas:

  1. Foster Creativity and Artistic Expression

    • Provide meaningful opportunities for participants to explore visual arts, crafts, and creative self-expression.

  2. Promote Skill-Building and Community Preparedness

    • Help participants develop practical skills that support independence and workplace/community involvement.

  3. Encourage Healthy Lifestyles

    • Teach physical wellness, healthy eating habits, and self-care through interactive and engaging activities.

  4. Support Social Skills and Community Belonging

    • Build interpersonal and friendship skills through group activities and inclusive social interaction.

  5. Celebrate Individual Growth and Identity

    • Create a respectful environment that values the strengths and potential of every individual.

Program Activities

Art

Participants engage in hands-on creative projects, producing functional and decorative items such as cards, dryer balls, and ornaments. They learn the full production cycle-design, creation, packaging, inventory tracking, and sales.
Community Connection: Items are delivered to local retailers and sold at craft markets throughout the year, providing real-world experience in entrepreneurship and customer engagement. These activities build confidence and promote meaningful community inclusion.

Sports & Fitness

This portion offers participants access to a variety of physical activities, with individualized instruction and adaptations to meet diverse needs. Activities support physical health, coordination, and overall well-being.
Community Connection: Group fitness classes and local facility use (e.g., gyms, community centers, parks) offer opportunities to engage with the wider community in inclusive and supportive environments.

Culinary

Participants explore healthy eating habits based on Canada’s Food Guide, and build key life skills in the kitchen. They practice food safety, cooking techniques, and proper utensil handling while preparing meals together.
Community Connection: Prepared foods may be shared at group gatherings or community events, and participants can contribute to local causes (e.g., baking for a food drive or seniors' center). These experiences help reinforce the value of giving back and connecting through food.

Music & Dramatic Arts

Participants enjoy creative expression through singing, rhythm, instrument play, and theatrical activities. These sessions support memory, communication, listening, and emotional expression in a fun and social setting.
Community Connection: Public performances or showcases (e.g., at local schools, libraries, or community events) provide participants with opportunities to share their talents and gain recognition from the broader community, fostering pride and inclusion.

Work Readiness

With support from staff, participants build foundational workplace skills through hands-on practice and real-world simulations. Areas covered include customer service, teamwork, cleaning and disinfecting, WHMIS, and food safety.
Community Connection: Skills are applied in community-based settings through sales at craft markets, potential volunteer placements in partnership with local businesses. These connections help bridge the gap between training and employment.
